Gotham Girls #4: On why Renee Montoya became a cop.
Renee: ”My mother and father weren’t thrilled when I told them. I’m their oldest, and the only daughter. Where they’re from, I’d be married with kids at my age. They’d have settled for me getting a ‘respectable’ job — doctor, lawyer, accountant. Whatever.
“My father really hated the idea — and not just because he thought I should settle down. He’s not fond of the police. Doesn’t think they treat Latinos fairly. And he’s not wrong. My own brothers, good kids, they’ve had some run-ins with the law. I told him that’s part of the reason I joined the force. To help make changes from the inside. Mama, well, she was just afraid I’d get hurt.
“It helps for other cops to see someone like me working next to them. Being a woman makes it harder. I end up with a lot to prove.”
